The Horta Project

New Project launched: the horta project

We are happy to share that we have received funding from the Royal Horticultural Society. The focus for the funding is to tackle environmental issues affecting the local community but it also aims to inspire others through actions so other individuals and hopefully other communities can replicate taking an approach to being more environmentally friendly through gardening. So, we are putting this funding to good use by putting it towards resources for our garden, which we are renaming as The Horta Project.

This project is a labour of love for us at TW as we use this garden to not only provide a beautiful space for our women during the warmer months, but a somewhere for our volunteers to have structure in their lives.

‘Horta is the Etruscan Goddess of the Sacred Gardens, as well as being the Goddess who urges us on and incites us to noble actions.  Thus, it is the perfect name for the new, women only, volunteer project recently launched by TW.  TW want to encourage women to join and attend voluntary to learn skills, build confidence and benefit the Wirral Community.  The Project is intended to benefit not only TW community site, but also the Wirral Community through its environmentally friendly approach using sustainable materials.  Volunteers needed for this project may want to benefit from reducing social isolation, build structure to their days, give back, learn new skills, prepare for employment but most importantly have fun.’

Now we have the funding to buy new tools and resources for the garden, including new equipment or old that needs replacing, such as waterproofs, paint for outdoor furniture, compost and recycle bins to store materials that will be used for creative outdoor projects, and seeds for growing projects.

We have great plans for the garden now we have the funding, including expanding the space and even adding beehives. We plan on keeping bees as a means of helping the local environment and we can hopefully start making and selling our own honey once our staff is trained to tend to them, as well as using the funding to buy honey pots.

The Project will launch on Friday 14th January and will run each and every Friday.
